Smith Watches

Smith watches are a fantastic display of quality timepieces. When investing in watches like those crafted by Smith, take care to look for the quality, age and details of each watch. Many of these older timepieces are highly valuable, especially those coming from Smiths Watches of the original years. These collector's items are highly valuable and irreplaceable. Collectors base the value of these watches after their condition and age.

Smiths Watches was founded n 1851 by Samuel Smith. This London, England based business started humbly, with a love for the industry and watch making. Samuel Smith's first watches were hand-crafted pieces of art, offering stylish and modern, for the time, elements to them. The company was his legacy and he taught his sons the art of watch making as well. After a few years, the company changed names to S. Smith & Sons (Motor Accessories) to better reflect what the company was offering as a whole. As this company, the Smiths Watch family received its first Royal Warrant in 1907, a prestigious award given to a limited few.

The company later changed names to S. Smith & Sons, England, Ltd. This happened when the watch industry broke from the rest of the company. At the same time, the entire Smiths Motor Accessories Ltd broke into other divisions including the Smiths Aircraft Instrument Ltd, Smiths English Clocks Ltd, and Smiths Industrial Instruments Ltd. Over time, this would prove to be the company's good fortune, as the company was then able to specialize in what it did best: watch making.

Later, by the end of World War II, the company had its factory built in Cheltenham that would later produce most of the watches and timepieces that the company is so well known for. Each piece was known for its intricate design and attention to details. Everyone was a high quality work of art. By the end of the war, the company held over 20 different companies as one. The watches produced during this time would prove to be some of the lasting memories of the industry.

By the 1970's, the most important division of the company was the Smiths Aviation Division, as it proved most profitable to the company. Being the main priority of the company, the clock and watch divisions were broken up and unfortunately, they were no longer produced. The company itself continued to do well, moving into the fields of avionics and instrumental development in automated aircraft flying. They also provided landing controls to top aviation companies. And finally, the 1980's brought in aerospace divisions that would focus on the jet age.

While the history of the Smiths Watch is not as extensive as that of the other lines, it is without a doubt that Smiths Watches are well loved and cherished collectors pieces. Today, you can still purchase some of these such as the Smiths Delux Gents Vintage 1950's English Wristwatch and the Smiths Astral 9 Carat Gold Gents English Cushion Watch.
